FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Lucie Libraries Host Zora Neale Hurston Reading Challenge

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Are you an enthusiast of Zora Neale Hurston’s writing or new to her work and want to read more? Join the St. Lucie County Library System’s Zora Reading Challenge for Black History Month.

Sign up at https://stlucieco.beanstack.org and read 11 of her selected works. Earn digital book badges along the way and receive a certificate that declares you are a Zora Neale Hurston aficionado when you are finished.

Hurston was an American author, anthropologist and filmmaker who spent the final years of her life in Fort Pierce. Her most popular novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” was published in 1937 and made into a movie in 2005. Hurston wrote more than 50 short stories, plays and essays. St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce created the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail to commemorate her time and accomplishments here locally. More information about this self-guided trail can be found at: https://www.cityoffortpierce.com/386/Zora-Neale-Hurston-Dust-Tracks-Heritage-.

Also to commemorate Black History Month, don’t miss the special showing of “Respect” on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Morningside Branch Library, 2410 SE Morningside Blvd., Port St. Lucie. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career, “Respect” is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice and become the queen of soul. Rated PG-13, this film has a running time of 2 hours and 25 minutes and features Jennifer Hudson, Marlon Wayans and Mary J. Blige.
