    Sam Cooke became the most important Soul singer in history. He was also the inventor of soul music and the most popular and beloved performer of his time. Cooke bridged the gap between black and white audiences and crossed generations. He is commonly known as The King of Soul for his distinctive vocal abilities and influence on the modern world of music. Sam Cooke appealed to everyone. He pioneered soul by melding elements of R&B, Gospel and Pop into a sound that was new and still coalescing at the time. His pioneering contributions to soul music led to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown. This world premiere concert features the greatest hits from the Legend of Soul including You Send Me, Only Sixteen, Cupid, Chain Gang, Twistin the Night Away, A Change is Gonna Come, Wonderful World to name a few.

The invited speakers from other institutions are colleagues who work on topics relevant to our Harbor Branch research themes. Lectures are held in the auditorium of the Johnson Education Center on the Harbor Branch campus, 5600 U.S. 1 North, Fort Pierce, 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. There is no charge to attend.

  12. City of Fort Pierce Presents “Movies in the Fort,” a Free Outdoor Film Series - Secret Life of Pets, rated PG

    Hollywood stars debut under Fort Pierce skies this season, as “Movies in the Fort” brings big-screen entertainment to local parks for the very first time. On various Friday nights from January to May, parks in six local neighborhoods will host FREE outdoor movies featuring today’s blockbusters and classic family favorites. Movies in the Fort gives residents in all parts of the city an opportunity to engage with their neighbors and community. Fort Pierce is committed to increasing access to family-friendly cultural opportunities, and this new movie-series is a perfect example of this work. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Patrons are also welcome to bring their own picnic dinner. He has performed, conducted and presented clinics at regional, national, and international conferences, and directed all-state jazz bands in Illinois, Indiana, Rhode Island, Missouri, Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Kentucky, Vermont, Arizona, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Washington.

    Howie Mandel returns to the Sunrise Theatre stage! He is the producer of many shows with his production company, one of which is the TBS series Deal With It, a hidden camera ambush show where unsuspecting members of the public are secretly dared to pull a prank on their unwitting companions. He also serves as one of the judges on NBC’s summer hit talent competition series America’s Got Talent alongside Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howard Stern. Previously, Howie received an Emmy nomination for Deal or No Deal. Howie’s Emmy Award-nominated animated children series Bobby’s World ran eight seasons on FOX and now appears in syndication six days a week in 65 countries. Howie has done countless comedy specials both on cable and network television. He has also hosted his own syndicated talk show, The Howie Mandel Show, and continues to be a mainstay on the talk-show circuit. Howie also continues to perform as many as 200 concerts a year throughout the US and Canada. Mature audiences only.
