City of Fort Pierce Announces Winners of “If I Were Elected Mayor” Essay Contest
FORT PIERCE, FL – The City of Fort Pierce is proud to announce the winners of the “If I Were Elected Mayor” essay contest, an initiative led by the Youth Advisory Council (YOCO) in celebration of Florida City Government Week.
Launched in October 2025, the contest invited middle and high school students to step into the role of mayor and share their perspectives on leadership, local issues, and the concept of Home Rule—the authority of cities to govern themselves in ways that best serve their communities. The contest encouraged students to think critically about civic responsibility and the impact of local government. The City received thoughtful submissions, including an entry from a third-grade student. Essays were evaluated based on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, and appropriate grammar, spelling, and structure.
Contest Winners:
• First Place: Gerlexus Thompson, 10th Grade, YouthServ Academy, Inc.
• Second Place: Demetrius Cobb, 8th Grade, YouthServ Academy, Inc.
• Third Place: Meliya Brown, 3rd Grade, YouthServ Academy, Inc.
The winners will be formally recognized at the February 2, 2026, City Commission meeting. The City of Fort Pierce commends all participants for their insight, creativity, and enthusiasm for civic engagement. Special thanks are extended to the Youth Advisory Council for its leadership in fostering youth involvement and awareness of local government.
