The City of Fort Pierce remains committed to ensuring the safety and care of all animals that reside within our community. In our continued efforts to provide humane treatment of the community’s animals, the City of Fort Pierce has teamed with the City of Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County to negotiate a unified contract for sheltering services with the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
Unfortunately, the negotiations have reached an impasse and the City of Fort Pierce must pursue all available legal remedies regarding the future of the lease and service contract for the operations of the Savannah Road shelter.
The three entities have established short-term solutions for the continued care of the animals. The City Commission also voted to move forward with planning for future management of the facility through a competitive solicitation process in the form of a Request for Qualifications/Proposals.
The City of Fort Pierce is progressive and has launched several initiatives to help reduce the pet population and animals impounded at the shelter. These programs include: Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (TNVR) for community cats, spay and neuter voucher program, prohibiting unattended tethering and differential licensing. These proactive programs have resulted in a significant reduction in animal impoundment.
