St. Lucie County, FL – The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie reminds the public that the elderly and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes are more likely to develop serious illness.  Please review the information below to help prevent the disease from spreading to people in your home and community.

 

PREVENTION

DOH St. Lucie encourages all residents to continue practicing public health preventative measures to slow the transmission of COVID-19, including: 

  • Maintaining healthy habits, like washing your hands frequently and covering your cough/sneeze to protect against respiratory germs like COVID or the flu.
  • Staying home when you are sick.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing a mask indoors in areas of substantial or high community transmission, regardless of vaccination status.  St. Lucie County is currently considered a community of high transmission according to the CDC COVID Data Tracker.

 

VACCINATION

DOH St. Lucie guidance remains – the vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself from COVID-19. Vaccine benefits include:

  • Significantly reduces the risk of contracting the virus even if you are exposed.
  • Teaching your body how to fight the virus.
  • Reducing the risk of severe symptoms, hospitalization, and death if you contract the virus.
  • Minimizing the ability for the virus to spread, especially to our most vulnerable populations.
  • Fighting against emerging variants that can cause worse symptoms and spread.

 

DOH St. Lucie transfers vaccine to 51 local medical providers and there are dozens of retail outlets for eligible residents to receive vaccine.  Please visit https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/vaccines/vaccine-locator/ for a list of COVID-19 vaccine providers in our area. On January 4, 2022, CDC updated their recommendation for when many people can receive a booster shot, shortening the interval from 6 months to 5 months for people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.  

 

On January 5, 2022, CDC endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation to expand eligibility of booster doses to those 12 to 15 years old. CDC now recommends that adolescents age 12 to 17 years old should receive a booster shot 5 months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination series. 

 

TREATMENTS

Monoclonal antibody treatments can prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death in high-risk patients who have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19.  CDR Maguire Health & Medical operates a Monoclonal Antibody Treatment Center at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds – Building C, located at 15601 Midway Road in Fort Pierce, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This site is only accepting appointments and proof of a positive COVID-19 test is required for treatment. After creating your account, if no appointments are available, CDR Maguire encourages you to check back frequently, as each cancellation opens a new appointment.

 

TESTING

On January 6, Florida Department of Health (Department) issued updated testing guidance and recommendations to maximize the benefits of COVID-19 testing in Florida. A copy of the full COVID-19 testing guidance can be found here.

 

Allied Health continues to provide COVID-19 testing with no out-of-pocket costs for residents Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Gwenda Thompson Trades Career Center at 3855 S. U.S. Hwy. 1, Fort Pierce, FL.  No appointment is necessary.

 

St. Lucie County Public Schools offers COVID-19 testing for School District Employee and Students

  • Manatee Academy K8 OPEN M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Fort Pierce Central HS OPEN M-F, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
