Chubby’s seminal recording of The Twist climbed to No. 1 on two separate occasions (in 1960 and again in ’62). The Twist spawned a massive dance craze and thrust Chubby Checker into the national spotlight. In addition, each new song brought a new dance involving "dancing apart to the beat" such as The Jerk, The Hully Gully, The Boogaloo and The Shake.
It was a vision of musical stardom as a Detroit teen that inspired Mary Wilson, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, to found one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history – The Supremes.
