Artificial Reefs on the Treasure Coast

Thursday, February 15, 2018

The Fort Pierce Yacht Club invites you to attend a free educational seminar, given by April Price of Sea-Life Habitat Improvement Project, Inc. Come learn about the types of artificial reefs being deployed along our coasts, and find out how you are affected by their construction. When we think of an artificial reef, a vision of fish swimming around a coral-covered, sunken ship may spring to mind. Surely sunken ships and old barges are not still being used as artificial reefs? If so, why? If not, then just exactly what are we sinking in the ocean, and WHY? Beyond the growth of barnacles, coral and colonizing of fish what other purpose do these artificial reefs serve? Do they actually increase the fish populations along our coast, and what types of fish (hopefully not lion fish)? Is there an economic benefit to the millions of $$ being spent on these "artificial" reefs?
